Ya’ll, I have something new to share!
We just got a hive of honey bees.
I know, I know, that sounds totally scary!
Like, why would anyone purposely BUY bees and put them in your yard near where you live?! It sounds slightly crazy but it is totally cool!
My husband grew up with honey bees and has been talking about it constantly the last few months. Since we sold our house about a month ago, the house we are currently in is on just over an acre of land which made it all too easy to get a hive of our own.
I’m not scared of bees but I have never been a huge fan of any insect that can fly and sting you…there is just something about that, that kind of freaks me out a little bit.
When my husband and I were dating, I joined in and extracted honey from one of their hives one time. Basically we were in the “honey house”, which is like a little shed, and they have a centrifuge that spins the honey out of the comb once you uncap it with a hot knife (I’ll write a detailed post about that later). It was a really neat experience…except for the fact that the bees are totally pissed that you are taking their food.
I have never been stung by a bee, so I’m not exactly sure what I am scared of. Maybe just the concept. But I’m sure at some point in the near future it will happen, I’m preparing myself now haha!
So yesterday was literally my first time in a bee suit! Ahhh! Since the fall honey flow is coming we added a new honey super (that’s the blue box in the pictures) to the top of the hives to allow the bees to have more space in the hive, as well as, somewhere to store they honey that they will be producing. In just a few weeks we will have our first honey extraction! We are super excited for that!!
Have you ever worked with bees? What tips do you have for a new beekeeper?
